how do you buy a visa gift card

The Visa Gift card is a prepaid card welcome everywhere Visa cards are accepted. Visa Gift cards are loaded with a set amount of funds and can be used for multiple purchases for as long as value remains on the card. Giving a Visa Gift card puts the power of choice in the hands of your friends and family.

The activation process is determined by the provider of your card, so you will need to follow the instructions provided with your card. Many Visa Gift cards are activated automatically upon purchase and may be used immediately. However, some Visa Gift cards must be activated by the recipient before they can be used.

Look for the initial balance in the card materials that come with your card at the time you receive it. These card materials provide important information, including the terms and conditions for using your card, so please read them carefully before using the card. If your card does not come with these materials, you should contact the financial institution that issued the card. Most issuers also offer web site access, a toll-free number, or instructions on the back of the card.

If your card has expired and there is a remaining balance of funds on the card, you may wish to receive a new card. Some issuers also offer the ability to receive remaining funds via cheque. If you have a balance on your expired card, contact the financial institution that issued your card or refer to your cardholder material to learn how to order a new card or a cheque. Issuers may charge a fee for this service.

If a merchant cancels a purchase transaction for you, it may take three to seven business days for the cancellation to show up on your Visa Gift card record and for the funds to be credited to your card and available for use. Check the balance on your card, either online or by phone, to see when your cancelled purchase transaction has been processed. Refer to the back of your card for the web site address/phone number of the financial institution that issued your card.

Yes. You can use your Visa Gift card anywhere Visa cards are accepted. Just always ensure that the remaining balance on your card will cover the amount of your planned purchases. If the remaining balance doesn't cover the entire transaction, let the merchant know how much funds you have remaining. The merchant may split the transaction and allow you to pay for part of the purchase using your Gift card, and then the remaining part of the purchase with another form of payment such as credit, debit or cash.

To make a purchase greater than the balance on your Visa Gift card, a merchant may accept a second payment method (credit card, debit card, cash or cheque) to cover the difference if their policy allows.

In case you need to return any items purchased with your Visa Gift card, be sure to save your Visa Gift card even after the balance is depleted. You will be asked to present this card when returning items purchased with the card. If the merchant's return policy allows for refunds, the value of the returned goods will be credited back to the card within three to seven business days of the return.

You should not use your Visa Gift card for recurring bill payments, such as your monthly telephone or cable bill. For recurring bill payment transactions please use your Visa Credit, Visa Debit or Visa Reloadable Prepaid cards instead. By doing so, you reduce the risk of using a Visa Gift card that has expired or has insufficient funds available.

Yes. However, you should be aware that restaurants and hotels factor in an automatic tip or other incidental expenses when authorizing your purchase transaction. If the total purchase amount including the estimated tip exceeds the amount available on your card, your card may be declined. If you think this will happen, inform the merchant in advance how much to deduct from your Visa Gift card and which second payment method (credit card, debit card, cash or cheque) you want to use to cover the difference.

Yes. Your Visa Gift card is intended for use anywhere Visa cards are accepted. To make an online or phone purchase, you will need to register your card. You can do this by either calling the provider, or by visiting their website.

If you're not a fan of credit cards, can't get credit cards because of poor credit, or just want to give a versatile, useful present, Visa gift cards may be the ideal solution. Most Visa gift cards work exactly like a prepaid Visa debit or credit card, except that Visa gift cards don't affect your credit score and cannot be reloaded with more money later on.

Cards ordered online between $10 and $200 can be mailed to the purchaser or card recipient. Cards ordered between $200.01 and $500 must be mailed to the purchaser. Cards are mailed with instructions and terms and conditions. Please consult the terms and conditions for information regarding gift card fee and expiration policies prior to purchase. Members buying gift cards online must pay with a Navy Federal Debit Card or Navy Federal Visa or Mastercard Credit Card. Members buying gift cards in branches can pay with their Navy Federal checking or savings account, cash or Navy Federal Visa or Mastercard Credit Card. Visa Gift Cards can be utilized only within the U.S. (excluding U.S. territories).

The Visa gift card is a prepaid card - not a credit card. You determine how much money you want to put on the card at the time of purchase. You can buy a Visa gift card for yourself or for someone else. Once you have purchased a Visa gift card, the cardholder can use it to make purchases anywhere Visa Debit is accepted.

Unlike store gift cards or gift certificates, the Visa gift card enables you to choose where you spend the money on your card. You are not limited to just one store. You can use it at any store or online retailer that accepts Visa Debit.

Your information protects your rights with the card if it is lost or stolen before the recipient receives it. It also enables the gift card recipient to call a Customer Service Representative and validate his/her identity as the gift card receiver.

Visa uses this type of information when filing a dispute for an unauthorized purchase. While your Social Security Number is not required, it enables Visa to better protect your dispute rights if your card is ever lost or stolen.

You can use a Visa or MasterCard (credit or debit) issued from us. We do not accept Visa or MasterCard issued from other institutions. Please note you will be charged a cash advance fee if using a credit card.

By saving your profile, you can purchase additional Visa gift cards in the future without having to enter your account information again. In addition, you can sign in and view your purchase history.

You can activate your Visa gift card one of two ways: Call 866.543.9161 (you can also find this on the activation sticker of your Visa gift card). There is no charge for using the voice response system. A fee applies if you speak with a Call Center representative. You can also sign in using your Visa gift card number and click Activate My Card.

You can also request one at the time you activate your card using the toll-free number on the sticker. There is no charge for using the voice response system. If you activate your card on the website, you will need to call 866.543.9161 to request a PIN.

Yes, you can still use your Visa gift card even though your name doesn't appear on the card. Make sure you sign the back of your Visa gift card because a retailer will validate your identity by comparing your signature on the back of your Visa gift card with the one on your receipt.

For purchases that are higher than your Visa gift card balance, use your gift card along with another form of payment. If you attempt to make a purchase for more than the amount available on the card without another form of payment, the transaction will be declined.

Yes, you can use your Visa gift card to make purchases online. We suggest that you register your card before purchasing online. Some retailers will not process your purchase without a valid address registered to the card.

A monthly maintenance fee is waived until the card becomes inactive for 18 months. If you still have a balance and you have not used your card for 18 months, your card will be charged a monthly inactive fee for as long as there is a balance remaining on the card.

Pending transactions are authorized transactions with a hold for the purchase amount until the transaction clears. Posted transactions are purchases that have cleared on your card. There are some pending transactions that are more or less than the amount you actually spent. Some retailers place a pre-authorization amount to ensure the account is active and that you have enough money to cover the purchase. Once the transaction posts to your account, the pending transaction will be removed within a few business days, and you can use the funds again.
